Shanghai in one day, done properly
Bund · Yu Garden · French Concession
The shape of the day
Most first days in Shanghai collapse under a checklist. This one keeps the riverfront, the old city and the plane-tree streets of the former French Concession — and adjusts the order to the light, the crowds and what you actually want to see.
What makes it different
- The Bund from the river wall, with the stories behind the facades.
- Yu Garden and the old bazaar, before the midday crush.
- A local lunch booked around your preferences, not a tour menu.
- The French Concession on foot, at the pace of the neighbourhood.
Step by step
Morning · The Bund
Meet your guide at the hotel and walk the river wall while the light is still low. We read the buildings from the outside in: the banks, the clock tower, the consulates, and the river that made all of it possible.
Late morning · Yu Garden
Cross into the old city for the rockeries, pavilions and a tea house. We time the garden before the coach groups and leave room for the bazaar lanes and a proper lunch nearby.
Afternoon · French Concession
The second half of the day is slower: plane trees, Art Deco apartments, a lane or two that are not on the tourist map, and coffee or tea where the neighbourhood actually goes.
Evening · Optional
Finish at the hotel, at dinner, or on a short Huangpu River cruise. We can book the table or the boat and leave the rest of the evening unscheduled.

Good to know
- Yu Garden is usually closed on Mondays; we swap in another old-city stop when it is.
- The Bund is busiest at sunset — we often reverse the route to avoid the crush.
- Comfortable shoes matter more than a camera bag on this day.
